Fishing

I have fished nearly all my life, starting with a worm on a bent pin for minnows at the age of three. Nowadays I concentrate more on flyfishing for trout and particularly salmon in the rivers of Scotland and Northern England. My passion for angling, and now the fun I get out of teaching others to fish, has lead me to qualify with the most respected teaching organisation in the fly fishing world, the Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors (AAPGAI). The path on this particular journey has only begun with more training and qualifications ahead.

There is more to fishing than casting but the ability to place a fly in the right place so that it fishes at the right depth and speed when covering  the fish is one of the essential skills of a successful angler

I specialise in teaching Spey casting with double handed rods. Overhead casting has its place in the salmon fisher’s arsenal but very often the physical conditions in which we fish, with high banks or trees behind us for example, prevent the use of an overhead cast which is where spey casting comes into it’s own. I teach  traditional spey casting with long bellied lines but also the more modern styles developed  in North America and Scandinavia using shorter shooting heads and Skaggit lines.

If you want to learn these essential skills or just brush up your technique please contact me to discuss your requirements. Teaching can be done on a one-to-one basis or in a small group.

I am also available for guiding you or your salmon fishing party – your own personal ghillie – providing a mix of casting tuition and fishing skills to help you get the most out of your precious time on the river.

A guide to our fees and charges

If you would like tuition in my area I charge £60 for a two hour session. I believe 2 hours is the optimum length of time to get the most out of a class without being overloaded on a one to one basis. If there are two or more students then we can work on a half or full day basis at £80 for a three hour class or £150 for a full 6 hour day.

For guiding I will charge £150 a day, for a 6 day week the cost will be £750.

If the fishing or tuition is some distance from my base in East Lothian then I will charge my travel and, where necessary, accommodation costs
